A Stroll Through the Gardens At Terressentials

In late May, it seems like each day brings a new bloom to the gardens at Terressentials.  Here's a sampling of a few of this week's surprises (clockwise from the top):

Wild Iris--A small wonder, this native American Iris is both beautiful and prolific.

Cranesbill Geranium--A cheerful blossom to fill up the low spots.

Peonies--Giant gorgeous flowers. Classic beauties.

Salvia--Striking vertical swirls of purples and violets.

Terressentials' Donation Helps Provide Safety, Hope and Healing to Victims of Violence

Terressentials' donation to Heartly House's Affair of the Heart helps provide safety,
hope and healing to victims of violence and abuse.

We're glad to hear our donation to Heartly House's Affair of the Heart helped make the event a success.

Funds raised from Affair of the Heart support Heartly House's services such as the 24-hour hotline, emergency shelter, legal services, counseling services, and community education that help to end the cycle of violence.

Heartly House was founded by Frederick County residents who wanted to offer help and support to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.  Today, local citizens and businesses like Terressentials continue to take a stand against violence in our community by supporting Heartly House's work.

Terressentials' Donation Supports Local Mental Health Services

Terressentials donates to Mental Health Association
Guests claim their Grab Bags at the Mental Health Association's Gala.  Which lucky guest received Terressentials' donation of certified organic skin and body care products? Photo: Mary Kate McKenna Photography
We're very happy to hear that our donation to the "Grab Bag" component of the Mental Health  Association's (MHA) annual Catoctin Affair Gala helped the organization raise more than $100,000. The money rasied ensures that MHA's programs and services will be available whenever our families, friends, neighbors or co-workers need help and hope.

The Frederick County Mental Health Association provides "programs that promote positive mental health and offer not just education, but the support and compassion needed to make real and lasting changes in the lives of those (they) serve."

One such service is the association's hotline, which operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It receives 1,700 suicide calls per year, an average of one call every five hours. The hotline has saved many lives and ensures that everyone has access to mental health services.

We are happy to support an organization that saves families, saves lives and makes our community whole.  Because according to MHA, "mental health is not about those people out there, it is about all of us. When one of us grows stronger, the whole community benefits."

BANANA SPLIT ICE BOX CAKE

Banana Split Ice Box Cake from Taza Chocolate
No need to turn on the oven for this festive cake! Better yet, make it the day before for best results.

Serves 8
Ingredients:
1 pint heavy whipping cream
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 cup (8 ounces) cream cheese
2 packages Taza Vanilla Chocolate Mexicano, chopped and melted
4 bananas, sliced lengthwise
1 pound strawberries, hulled and sliced
2 sleeves graham crackers
Whipping cream, to garnish
Maraschino cherries, to garnish
Rainbow sprinkles, to garnish
To Prepare:
1. To make frosting, in a standing mixer fitted with a whisk attachment, beat the heavy cream and sugar until peaks form. Add the cream cheese and continue to beat until well combined. Remove half the mixture from the bowl and reserve in a second bowl, then turn speed to low and slowly add the melted chocolate until fully combined. Set mixture aside and reserve.
2. Place a small amount of the white frosting on a serving plate then place 4 graham crackers on top. Cover the graham crackers with some of the chocolate frosting, followed by halved bananas. Coat 4 more graham crackers with chocolate frosting and place them frosting side down on top of the bananas. Coat the top layer of graham crackers with white frosting and chopped strawberries, then coat 4 more graham crackers with white frosting and place them frosting side down on top of the strawberries. Repeat frosting and layering until all the graham crackers and fruit have been used.
3. Use remaining frosting to ice the outside of the cake, then let sit in the fridge overnight. Shortly before serving, decorate the cake with additional whipped cream, strawberries, sliced banana, maraschino cherries, and rainbow sprinkles. Keep chilled until ready to serve.

Terressentials Pop Up Shop and Fair Trade Mini-Expo--May 7

Washington, D.C.—May 4, 2015—Terressentials, Frederick, Maryland-based crafters of certified organic skin and body care for 24 years, will partner with Fashion Washington to host a one-day Pop Up Shop and Fair Trade Mini-Expo on May 7 from 8:30-5:30 at the Washington Post Building at 1150 15th Street NW in Washington, D.C.

At a time when more shoppers are reaching for certified organic and fair trade products, the Pop Up Shop and Mini-Expo will offer visitors a chance to stay informed about their choices.

“We love the challenges of sourcing our certified organic ingredients from partners around the world. It's so exciting to see faces light up when folks first experience the scents and sensations of the these ingredients in our certified organic skin and body care products. We also love to inspire people with heart-warming success stories about the artisans who make our fair trade craft products,” co-founder Diana Kaye explains.

Terressentials is one of the oldest personal care companies to have earned USDA organic certification for its many products. The USDA National Organic Program requires adherence to its strict rules for the growing and processing of organic materials and rigorous certification procedures to produce verified, certified organic-labeled finished products made without synthetic toxic chemicals.

The Pop Up Shop will feature Terressentials' locally-produced handcrafted certified organic personal care products and will also present an elegant collection of fair trade and fair made jewelry, scarves, handbags and gifts.

Fair Trade focuses on helping mostly third-world farmers and artisans build sustainable businesses. One of the key goals of the fair trade movement is to empower women and under-privileged groups by providing fair wages and safe working conditions, by creating opportunities for education and health care and by reinvesting profits within communities while preserving traditional culture and protecting the environment.  The Pop Up will also feature the work of a number of American artisans.

“We love our organic and fair trade work and are completely committed to our environmental education mission,” Diana shares. “We hope that our efforts will serve as a model of true sustainability and that we will continue to empower others to make informed choices and to view our world as one giant community sharing our planet's resources.”
