Now that the London Olympics are over, and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the Royal Wedding are fading to a distant memory, you may be going through a little bit of British withdrawal. In fact, the tradition was started by the working poor of 19th and early 20th century England as a way to fortify themselves against the afternoon doldrums with sugar and caffeine.
